Automated home 2.0 – #28 We’ve chosen Siemens smart Appliances for our home
While the Automated home is all about technology, we’re not interested in gimmicks. instead we are always on the look out for tech that works to make our lives easier, not more complicated.
So when the time came to choose our ovens, dishwasher, hob, fridge, freezer, washer and dryer we knew we wanted something really clever.
Smart home Appliances
With Siemens smart appliances, that can be as simple as a helpful notification on our watch that the dryer has finished or that we are running out of dishwasher tablets.
Siemens smart appliances can help with our energy efficiency too. For example you can set the washing machine to come on when you are on your night time electricity tariff.
Home connect dishwashers, washing machines and tumble dryers with the flex start function can also be setup to use energy from a Solar PV system or time-of-use tariff using the SMA Sunny home Manager.
Home Connect
It’s only a few short years ago that all this sounded like science fiction, but connected appliances are a reality.
All these smart features use home Connect. The home connect smartphone app is used for the initial setup of each appliance, connecting them to your network. It uses 2.4 GHz 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi and with a few clicks you are online (we’ll look at home connect in more detail in a future post).
Once connected you’ve got all the advantages of remote operation from anywhere with an Internet connection as well as firmware upgrades too. Some appliances even allow for remote diagnostics in the event of a fault, meaning the engineer can arrive on site with any parts that are required.
We’ve come from using an oil fired stove in our last house to these sleek new ovens. switching to an all electric house means they will shortly be running on renewable electricity too.
The transition has been extraordinarily easy and rewarding. The ovens are perfect for an expert baker like my better half, or a novice like me. For example here I am cooking a baked potato.
In reality that involves just popping it in the oven, entering its weight, selecting the time I want to eat it at and walking away. Brilliant.
Laundry appliances can sometimes be hard to work out and here the advantages of the tech shine through again.
The smartphone app exposes all the features of the machine, making it easy to set the perfect wash cycle. Here’s an example of stepping through the options with our bedclothes to get the perfect cycle.
Further convenience comes from the i-DOS system that automatically uses the correct amount of detergent and water for each load.
Pre-Sales Service
One of the best experiences we’ve had during the research for the house was our visits to the BSH home of innovation Showroom in Dublin. This is a fantastic resource for anyone on the island of Ireland and completely free.
Here you can look, touch and try out the appliances you are considering for your home. The staff are experts and provide great advice. We also returned here to attended some cookery demonstrations which gave a real insight into the ovens capabilities and now we know how to use the temperature probe that came with them.
Design
The studioLine appliances have the sleek modern aesthetic that we craved and the latest blackSteel design is a perfect minimal match for our kitchen with its dark glass facia accented with stainless steel.
There are quality touches throughout too, like the large rotary encoder that is milled from a solid block of stainless steel and the colour TFT touchscreens used to control the ovens.
The proof is in the Pudding
These appliances have the smart tech, the convenience features, the sleek styling and the service to go with it all.
So after a couple of months of living with these machines what’s the verdict? Well if the proof of the pudding is in the eating, then all I can say is Yum. Our Siemens appliances are amazing!

sme profilovali Aerin na pohovor v našom vydaní v decembri 2013. Bola plná skvelej rady, takže sme ju požiadali, aby sa podelila o oveľa viac jej návrhov na bývanie s neuveriteľným štýlom parku a avenue a pozrite sa na fotogalériu jej obľúbeného nábytku.
H&H: Máte niekoľko krásnych kúskov vo svojej zbierke Aerin vyvinutých pre zábavu.
AL: Milujem všetky naše zlaté plavidlá. Myslím, že zlato je fantastický teplý neutrál, je tu niečo veľmi nadčasové, čo okamžite vytvára pocit luxusu a tepla.
H&H: Aký je váš preferovaný darček pre hostesky, dáte alebo získať?
AL: Sviečky sú skvelé na sviatky. Máme krásnu zbierku sviečok a vyrábame tieto zátky červeného vína vo výške 75 dolárov, ktoré sa cítia skutočne značné. Existuje obyčajná zlatá guľa, ktorá je podľa môjho názoru darček pre najvyššiu hostsku.

Z-Wave alliance & Silicon Labs to open Z-Wave Specification
just 24 hours after Amazon, Apple, Google and the Zigbee alliance unveiled their plans to develop a new open source smart home standard, the Z-Wave alliance fought back today with an announcement of their own.
The Z-Wave Alliance, along with Z-Wave silicon vendor Silicon Labs, announce that they are opening the Z-Wave network layer and communications protocol – known now as the Z-Wave Specification.
This swift action from Z-Wave reiterates the relevance of yesterdays multi-vendor statement.
Hopefully it will ultimately be the consumer that benefits once the dust settles from the battles that lie ahead in this land grab. It will certainly be interesting to enjoy this all shake out.

AUSTIN, Texas, Dec. 19, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — Silicon Labs (NASDAQ: SLAB) and the Z-Wave alliance announce plans to open the Z-Wave® Specification as a ratified, multi-source wireless standard available to all silicon and stack vendors for development. With this change, semiconductor and software vendors will be able to join the Z-Wave ecosystem, contribute to future improvements of the leading smart home standard, and develop and supply sub-GHz Z-Wave radio devices and software stacks. Expected to be available in the second half of 2020, the opened Z-Wave Specification will include the ITU.G9959 PHY/MAC radio specification, the application layer, the network layer and the host-device communication protocol. instead of being a single-source specification, Z-Wave will become a multi-source, wireless smart home standard developed by collective working group members of the Z-Wave Alliance. With a lot more than 100 million interoperable devices deployed, a lot more than 3,200 certified products and over 700 member companies, Z-Wave has the most mature and pervasive smart home ecosystem in the market.
Alliance members and smart home consumers will benefit from the hallmark features of Z-Wave, including interoperability, backwards compatibility, the S2 safety framework, easy installation with SmartStart, low-power functionality with a 10-year battery life and long-range with sub-GHz mesh. The Z-Wave alliance will maintain the certification program and expand the using to supply technology vendors with both hardware and stack certification and product makers with application layer certification.

The Z-Wave alliance will collectively development a fully realized smart home standard.”
Silicon Labs is committed to IoT standardization. By expanding access to Z-Wave as a standard supported by multiple vendors, the smart home ecosystem will benefit both from broader technology support as well as accelerated market adoption.

Smart home Hacks
The O’Reilly series of “Hacks” books, in their own words ‘reclaims the term ‘hacking” for the good guys–innovators who explore and experiment, unearth shortcuts, create beneficial tools, and come up with fun things to try on their own.’, sounds like a pretty good description of a UK home Automater to me, so I was a little ecstatic to see O’Reilly had published 2 books in the series for home automators.
The first of these is “Smart home Hacks”, by Gordon Meyer, a collection of short, quick descriptions of how to automate certain tasks, a quick discussion of the theory, then ideas on how to extend the idea. I really like this approach, and those familiar with the C/C++ developers Bible will recognise the style. because of the way it is written you can either read the book from cover to cover and learn the subject, but it’s equally good if you know what you want, and just want to know the best way to achieve it. It’s the kind of book you can take to the toilet, open it at a page and learn something new…
Neither of the two books on review is for the complete novice, new to home Automation, but this book does swiftly skim over the basics, introducing you to the concept of X10 and the various pieces of control software, however, it doesnt dwell on the subject and swiftly moves on to remind readers that WAF (or SAF as the book calls it), is important, and gives several guidelines on how to achieve this.
O’Reilly has a section on their web sites for hacks, and some of the examples in this book are taken from the website. The author also suggests ways in which the hack can be extended and leaves you to go and figure out how yourself.
If I have one gripe about the book, its that the software chosen to illustrate the various hacks is Mac based, though this is undoubtedly because that is what the author uses, and to be honest, the people this book is aimed at must have no problems converting the examples give to their own preferred HA controller.
Smart home Hacks is by far the best home Automation book I have read, it’s well written, has good examples, and draws on the experience of a whole community, lots of other HA books suffer from being written from the viewpoint of a single author, or a collaboration between two.
